The Lawgiver’s Son is a collection of Dwight Maxwell's early poems, which in their honesty and complexity cover various stages in the development of his rise consciousness and illustrates his psychological, spiritual, religious and cultural awakening to the truth of his identity as a Black man in New York. The collection include poems written in the Jamaican vernacular which was done to legitimise the language as a tool of resistance and transformation.
